Career Book Must Reads – Christmas Picks By Natalie McMillan

By Natalie McMillan – Red Shoes Coaching

I do love a good book as part of my Christmas. What about you? If you are stuck for inspiration or on the search for recommendations, then let me help with my Top 5 Books for women. I have read them all and recommend them for different reasons.

Invisible Women

My first book is Invisible Women by Caroline Criano Perez. This book was one of the most talked about books last year and for good reason. It offers a fascinating insight into how decisions are made across our society which then (unintentionally) discriminate against women. Let’s just say I am still reeling from how shovelling snow features!

Work Like A Woman

My second recommendation is Work Like a Woman by Mary Portas. Mary is never one to hold back and this book gives her own unique insight into how she has not conformed and been successful. An inspirational read and not just for those in retail.

Start With Why

If neither appeal, how about my third? One of my favourite inspirational writes and speakers is Simon Sinek. He has many books and the one I am going to pick is ‘Start with Why’. His writing is accessible, and his theories are simple yet engaging. He has a wealth of Ted Talks and podcasts if you prefer these to a book.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Number four carries on the theme of behaviour in business with my go to business guru, Stephen Covey. His book ‘The 7 Habits of Highly-Effective People’ remains the cornerstone of many development theories around business and leadership. I re-read this continually as it is a great reminder and provides me with inspiration each time.

Eat That Frog !

Last but by no means least, is a slightly different book. It is by
Brian Tracy and is ‘Eat that Frog!’. This has a personal bias to it as a choice as it is typical of my behaviour and avoiding those horrible tasks at work. It refers to a famous quote by Mark Twain “Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day”. It is now a mantra I repeat frequently.

And for a personal read ………..

The Handmaid’s Tale

Now, I said 5 but I don’t like to confirm so here is one more at Number 6: The Handmaid’s Tale. I read this in 1993 and it is still one the most impactful books I have ever read. I’ll leave it there.
