MMB Magazine for working mothers was launched in late 2015, by our founder Abbie Coleman. Having run her own business for 8 years she returned to work after a short maternity break. She found her place in business seemed to have shifted. This was through no decision of her own but due to the fact she was now a working parent needing flexible working hours and a mother running a business.
Whilst she was fortunate to have a strong business network to call on and able to create a flexible work pattern as an employer. She realised this was not available to everyone and so many parents were being pushed out of their careers through the simple limitation of working hours not being flexible, especially women.
There were no sites with all the information in one place for working parents to access and nothing that seemed simple and clear to navigate. The websites were all based on teething and nappy rash not around pensions on maternity leave, finance, childcare support and intelligent discussions on navigating your career whilst a parent.
We launched online in West Yorkshire in December 2015 and published our first printed magazine in April 2016 with 15k copies distributed in Leeds through employers to employees and through venues and retail outlets. In 2018 we will have over 70k magazines going out across our regions. We went on to launch YorkshireFlex and NorthwestFlex in 2017, bringing together over 150 employers to talk about flexible working and exchange ideas and best practice.
We are launching MMB Returners in April 2018 to support businesses retain and engage with all talent taking time away from their business. The ageing demographic is going to be top heavy in the next few years along with the need to support employees who need to become careers and people looking for work-life balance along with working parents. Flexible Working is not just a hot topic but something that is needed for our business and working life future.
We will also be launching our MMB Magazine mini-booklets for employers to give out to employees to support them with information when finding out they are pregnant, on maternity/paternity leave or coming back into the workplace. We also launched our flexible working directory listing companies who offer and consider flexible working along with a live job board of current roles. Including all roles that are flexible working, annualised hours, part time, job share and term time roles. Allowing our working parents to find the career roles and employers who offer flexible working.
