4 Questions To Ask When You Join A Business

People often assume that an interview is all about an employer finding out what a candidate can offer a business. But this is actually a two way street. You should be asking questions as a potential employee too. Here are some of the key queries to keep in mind.

What Structure Is There For Promotions?

No one wants to feel as though they are stuck in a dead end position. That’s why it’s important to make sure that there is a structure in place which will provide the right opportunities to claim a coveted promotion within the business. If there’s no pathway forward, then this might limit the value you will receive by working for a company like this. Alternatively, you could explore whether your business is willing to provide you with further training. There may not be a route forward in this company, but it will make you more hireable overall so it’s a great possibility.

Are You Flexible In Terms Of Hybrid Working?

Next, you should think about whether a business is providing options in terms of hybrid work possibilities. During the COVID-19 pandemic, countless companies closed their office doors and team members operated from the comfort of their home. Now that the situation has settled somewhat, businesses are opening the doors to the office once more. While this is understandable, research shows that employees get a far better work/life balance and improved quality of life by operating – at least partially – from home. You’ll find that a lot of businesses are open to this idea, if you can deliver the right performance.

Are There Out Of Work Activities?

One final question that you can ask when you are applying for a position in a new business is whether there are any out of work activities planned. A question like this will reveal the type of office culture that exists in this company or indeed, if there is one at all.

The type of out of work activities on offer could include weekend trips and team retreats that are designed to bring people in the company together as one unit.

What Health And Safety Policies Are In Place?

As a standard, you should ask about the health and safety policies that exist in a business. Some companies use health and safety consultancy services to ensure that they are hitting the right mark here.

Every employee, regardless of position or sector, has the absolute right to feel safe at working. Don’t forget that safety issues in a business aren’t always a heavy piece of equipment falling on your head. You can get injured by typing at a desk. The most common type of injury in the workplace today is RSI. You should inquire whether a business has invested in ergonomic furniture to avoid this.

We hope this helps you understand some of the questions that you should ask and consider before you commit to accepting a job on the market. Remember, if you have the right qualifications and experience, you will have no problem finding a company that will treat you with the respect you deserve.
