Starting the New Year with SMART Goals

Happy New Year to all our readers and welcome to Tiro’s 1st blog for MMB South Yorkshire & Derbyshire.

With the festive season well and truly behind us, how many of you can say you were excited to return to work? If you weren’t then by now searching for a new job opportunity and speaking with recruitment agencies will probably be high on your to do list. But where do you start?

If your new year’s resolutions were linked to career aspirations, make sure that you stick with them by turning them into SMART Goals instead.

Be Specific

What exactly is it that you want from your new role? How many hours do you want to work? Where do you want to be based?
Make the goal Measurable, how will you measure your progress?

Is the goal Attainable

What impact will it have on your life as it is now? Will you be able to manage and still have the time, energy, head space for your new role?

Is the goal Relevant 

Do you want to stay in your current industry? Does your skill set match your new career goal and if not, what top up courses could you do to help you stand out as a candidate?
Make the goal Time Bound – Have you set yourself a realistic deadline in which you want to have secured a new role?

The next step would be to think about where you would like to work. Is there a company that you have always wanted to work with? Are there a few of them? If so, make a list with both the companies and if possible their hiring managers or recruitment partners – complete with contact details!

Look on the company websites and see if they have any live roles in line with what you are looking for. If a job description is available, use it to help you tailor your CV and cover letter. Make sure that each CV you send is specifically adapted for the role you are interested in. The person at the other end wants to feel like you have approached them and only them.

Do some market research to find out as much as you can about your dream role for example:
  • the kinds of duties you will have
  • the working hours
  • rates/ salary
  • benefits
  • competitors

This will help you identify companies which match your needs. For instance, if you have childcare needs, targeting companies which have an in-house crèche or who are open to flexible working would be a must.

When job searching, think outside of the box:
Networking

If you have a friend who knows everyone who’s everyone, ask them to invite you to their next event. Its proactive and will impress potential future employers.

Social media

Use it correctly. There is plenty of help and advice out there put it can be a powerful tool when used correctly.

Self-promotion

Are you active on social media? Do you have a website or Facebook page? Are you registered on any professional boards? If so shout about them and make sure people know you are out there.
