5 types of blog post people want to read

One of the problems I often come across is people not knowing what to blog about. How do you come up with ideas? What exactly does your audience want to read? What will make people share your posts or subscribe to your blog?

To give you a little inspiration, I’ve put together this list of 5 types of blog posts people want to read.

  1. Informational

Gone are the days of heading to the local library and scouring the reference section to find information. A simple Google search can usually be sufficient to find out what we need. That’s why informational blog posts work so well. Think about the questions you get asked and turn them into subjects for your blog:

What maternity rights do I have?
How can I find out what my pension is worth?
What’s the difference between a sole trader and a limited company?
When is the best time of year to visit the Caribbean?
What age should you start potty training your kids?

No matter what industry you work in, if you can provide the information that your target audience is looking for, then you are providing value.

  1. Instructional/guides

Help your readers solve a problem with a how-to or step-by-step guide.

How to…

…get rid of red wine stains

…fix a leaky tap

…choose the right pushchair

…prepare for an interview

…prevent limescale build-up

Step-by-step guide to…

…building a website

…planning your wedding

…cooking Christmas dinner

…buying your first home

…applying make-up

These types of post give you a chance to showcase your expertise and your readers will appreciate your help.

  1. Lists

List posts are the most popular type of post. They are easy to scan so a reader can get information quickly.

5 great ways to…

…reduce your calorie intake

…increase your income

…entertain children for free

  1. Reviews

When it comes to buying, we want to know we’re making the right decision. That’s why review posts are so useful. You can do a simple review of a new product, or a contrast and compare of different products, listing the pros and cons of each.

You can choose any type of product from cars to moisturisers, restaurants to flooring; as long as it’s something your target audience would be interested in.

  1. Inspirational, entertaining or funny

Sometimes people just want to be entertained or inspired. What things regularly go wrong in your industry? What annoys you? How did you achieve success? What interesting or funny stories do you have? Who are the most inspirational people in your industry? What are the most challenging things about being a parent/teacher/recruiter/small business owner?

Use your blog to tell stories, give an insider view of your industry or share advice with those who are just starting out.

Write for your audience

Whatever type of blog posts you decide to write about, remember who you are writing for. There’s no point creating a 1500-word blog post about a subject your target audience isn’t interested in.
