HOW TO TAKE CONTROL AND COMMUNICATE YOUR BUSINESS VISION
Imagine if every day, you knew your team was laser focussed on achieving your company goals. They’re all headed in the same direction, overcoming obstacles and making decisions that got you to where you wanted to be. Imagine if you knew that your people would act in the way that you wanted – that what you think is important, they think is important too. Imagine if every result didn’t always rely on you!
YOUR COMPANY CORE IDENTITY
For this to become a reality, you need to get really clear about your Core Identity. The DNA that makes your company unique and singles you out from the competition.
If you can get this right, articulate it clearly and implement it throughout every area of your business, you’ll have the clarity, focus and direction that leads to consistent growth. And it means that when you wake up in 10 years’ time, you have built the kind of business you wanted in the first place.
Your Core Identity is what you do, what you want to achieve and how you’re going to do it. It is the anchor that keeps you on track.
And the thing that confuses most leaders is that these things have little to do with the tactics you employ!
YOUR PURPOSE – WHY DOES YOUR COMPANY EXIST
What are you actually trying to do –the ‘why’ of your business? Your purpose should drill down to the why your company exists. Do you just ‘build websites’, or do you actually ‘grow empires’, do you just ‘arrange flowers’, or do you ‘bring beauty into people’s lives’?
Your purpose should focus on the present, be bigger than just making money, inspire and excite you, as well as guide and challenge what you do.
WHAT YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE IN BUSINESS – YOUR VISION
You need to be really clear about what your end goal is – the vision for your business. When everyone can see your vision, you move towards it together and are far more likely to achieve it.
It doesn’t have to include financials or number of employees, but your vision should focus on the future, how you will change the world/your industry/your customers lives. It should motivate and inspire great things. A great vision means that you’re not just moving but that you have a sense of direction.
HOW YOU WILL DO IT – YOUR VALUES
This is not about tactics and strategy, but the behaviours that underpin your purpose and vision. Your values dictate how you act. And every company has them, whether articulated or not. Your values drive what’s OK and what’s not OK. So… what are the behaviours that you value most? For example, would you prefer people to cut corners to get the job done, or precisely follow your processes? Would you tell a white lie to keep a customer happy, or is absolute honesty integral to how you work?
There are no right or wrong answers, but when you are crystal clear about what you expect and embed those values into every aspect of your business, your culture thrives. From the way you recruit, to how you design your processes, and performance manage your teams, your values should be integral to everything you do. Otherwise you end up with everyone working to different standards and constantly butting heads.
Once you’ve defined your Core Identity you know who you are as a business, you have clarity, focus and direction that can be shared with others! You can get the right people into your business and you can build a culture that does the best work in the best ways. It keeps you grounded when business challenges come your way and also helps you see the possibilities around you.
