Best Beaches In Salcombe – Our favourite for the kids

Mill Bay Beach

This beach is reachable by ferry or car (national trust car park) , and it provides a peaceful atmosphere and lovely views of the Salcombe estuary.

Mill Bay’s charm lies in its pristine, soft sand that’s free of rocks. The turquoise waters are exceptionally clear, with a gentle ebb that makes it perfect for young children to frolic in safely along with sand castle building on the sandy beaches. The area offers ample opportunities for paddleboarding, and throughout the day, you’ll spot private boats dotting the waters. Despite its popularity, Mill Bay has a comfortable, uncrowded vibe that never feels overwhelming.

We’ve been bringing Kimi to Salcombe for the past 9 years, and Eliza has joined us twice. When it comes to the best beaches in Salcombe for kids, Mill Bay unquestionably takes the lead, and it’s become our absolute favorite spot.

Reaching Mill Bay is a breeze either by car or by hopping on the boat that departs from the steps near the Ferry Inn in Salcombe town centre. The fare was £2.30 for adults and £1.70 for kids each way during our last visit in August 2023.  If its low tide you can walk along the beaches to reach Mill Bay which is a lot uicker. In high tide you need to walk up the steps from the ferry drop off site and turn right and follow the road to Mill Bay, its easy enough with a pushchair if you can fit it on the boat! But does go up and down, its also the road to the car park so keep your eyes out if littles ones run ahead.

There is a small car park that seems to have ample parking, unless its a hot sunny day and then you need to be early. A quick journey takes you to the jetty on the opposite side, and if you’re there during low tide, you can take a leisurely stroll along the beach toward Mill Bay. You’ll recognize Mill Bay beach by the sight of kids playing in the water, constructing dams with the stream’s flow meeting the sea. The area under the shade of the trees is a haven for parents, offering a chance to sit back while the kids create and befriend each other.

Public toilets are conveniently located just a short walk from the beach. While they’re basic and have no light its pretty grim but functional in my experience, they serve their purpose well for the kids. A highlight is the food van nearby, which has expanded its offerings over the years. Renowned for their delicious crepes, they also serve ice cream, coffees, and refreshing drinks.

The beach buzzes with various games, and it’s a dog-friendly haven as well. The kids naturally form friendships and play harmoniously, making it an especially enjoyable experience for Kimi when he was there on his own. Don’t forget to explore the intriguing rock pools as well.

South Sands Beach

A sandy beach with clear waters, suitable for swimming and a great spot for water sports. It’s easily accessible from Salcombe by a short passenger ferry ride.

South Sands is beautiful as well with an amazing south sands hotel and you can easily jump the South Sands Ferry from Salcombe town center. You can also walk even with a pushchair and we have on many an occassion but there are some seroius streep hills so be aware. Also the beach much like North Sands has a strong smell of seaweed.

The beach is known for its cleanliness and well-maintained environment and water . The gently sloping shoreline and relatively calm waters make it a safe spot for swimming, especially for families with children.  The calm and sheltered waters of Sands Beach are ideal for various water-based activities. You can enjoy swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, and even snorkeling in the clear waters. The beach’s location also makes it a popular spot for boating and sailing as well as beach games.

The beach has toilets facilites and a beachside café for the perfect spot to releax. The café provides a range of refreshments, snacks, and meals, allowing you to indulge in a beachfront dining experience.

North Sands Beach

Situated just a short stroll from Salcombe town center (with a couple of steep inclines that can be managed even with a pushchair, tougher on the way back), this sandy haven offers more than its fair share of charm. It’s an excellent choice for families and holds splendid views, all while being associated with the famous Winking Prawn, its the perfect place to spend a day.

A stone’s throw from this scenic shoreline is The Winking Prawn, a dining gem that seamlessly enhances your beach day. Renowned for its tantalizing seafood dishes and local cuisine, The Winking Prawn effortlessly complements the coastal backdrop. With everything from freshly-caught delicacies to innovatively crafted plates, the restaurant guarantees a dining experience to savor.

While we often find ourselves drawn to Mill Bay, we mustn’t overlook North Sands Beach’s merits. It boasts serene waters, inviting expanses of soft golden sands, and a vibrant family-friendly atmosphere. Visitors can revel in the tranquil surroundings, relishing in the simplicity of a day well-spent. Notably, furry friends are welcome on this shoreline, a contrast to South Sands located a bit farther down the coast.

The easygoing ambiance coupled with views of the beach creates a seamless fusion of flavors and landscapes. Don’t miss the chance to sport a stylish Winking Prawn Hoodie they are amazing and the kids will love them (They also wash well and last!).  Although it must be mentioned, the restaurant does occasionally play host to a few pesky wasps.

If you’re mindful of clean waters, rest assured that you can conveniently assess the beach’s water conditions throughout the summer here. This practice guarantees a clean and delightful experience for every beach visitor.
