The Rise of Toy Subscriptions: A Comprehensive Guide On Renting Baby Toys

In recent years, a novel trend has been making waves in parenting circles across the UK – renting baby toys and, for small children, a pack n plays approach. These toy subscription boxes are starting to pop up across the UK, offering a curated selection and wide variety of toys for children of all ages, revolutionising how families approach playtime. But are these rental platforms the way forward for UK parents? Is it a fad or an intelligent way to look after our planet, children and wallets?

Origins of Toy Subscriptions in the UK

The concept of renting baby toys found its roots in the United States in the early 2000s, but it was in the late 2010s that the trend made its way across the pond to the UK. Spearheaded by pioneering companies such as BabyPlays and Whirli, toy subscriptions took off, offering parents a cost-effective and space-saving alternative to traditional toy ownership.

What is a Toy Subscription?

A toy subscription service allows parents to rent a rotating selection of toys for their children regularly, typically on a monthly, quarterly, or annual basis. These services operate online, providing a convenient and hassle-free experience for parents. Select your toy package subscription online, click the toys you are interested in, and

Cost Considerations

Monthly rates of subscription costs for toy rental services can vary widely depending on the company and the chosen plan. On average, a monthly fee for subscriptions ranges from £20 to £40, with quarterly plans offering a slight discount at £50 to £100 for a three-month period. Annual plans can range from £150 to £300 or more, providing the most significant savings. Some subscriptions will also offer free delivery or free shipping. Others will charge delivery fees, so check the rental terms before signing up for a toy box club.

Advantages of Toy Subscriptions

  1. Cost-Efficiency: Renting toys is a cost-effective way to provide children with various age-appropriate toys without the financial commitment of purchasing expensive products or keeping up with new toy purchases.
  2. Space-Saving: With limited living space, toy rentals offer a clutter-free solution. They are ideal for toy rotation, allowing parents to rotate toys in and out as their child’s interests evolve, and no more toys stuffed into a toy bin that doesn’t get played with.
  3. Environmental Impact: Renting toys reduces the demand for new toy production, contributing to a more sustainable approach to playtime and less plastic in landfill waste.
  4. Developmental Appropriateness: Toy subscription services curate collections based on a child’s age group and developmental stage, ensuring they can access toys that stimulate their growth.
  5. Large Inventory Of Baby And Toddler Toys: Many of these services have a vast array of toys, ensuring you can always find something to pick from.
  6. Seasonal Choice: When you head into summer, it can be a great way to offer your children great outdoor toys, beach gear, and beach toys without the significant cost outlay for toys that may only be played for over six weeks.

Considerations and Potential Drawbacks

  1. Limited Selection: Some services may have a narrower variety of toy selections than traditional toy stores.
  2. Wear and Tear: Rented toys may show signs of previous use, although reputable services take measures to clean and sanitise items and ensure they are in excellent condition.
  3. Subscription Costs: While cost-effective, subscription fees can accumulate over time.
  4. Loss of Ownership: Children may be unable to keep their favourite toys permanently, and some may need help with the toy turnaround.
  5. Damage Or Missing Pieces: While you will be taking care of the toys, it’s an obvious conclusion to say accidents do happen, and things can go missing and get broken. Ensure you read the rental company’s terms and conditions for damaged toys or missing pieces.

Final Thoughts

Toy subscriptions have emerged as a transformative rental model for UK parents to provide their children with enriching play experiences. While there are considerations such as cost and potential wear, the benefits, including cost-efficiency and environmental sustainability, often outweigh the drawbacks for many families. By carefully evaluating your needs and preferences, toy subscriptions can be a game-changer in approaching playtime with your little ones. Embrace this innovative trend and unlock a world of diverse and stimulating play for your child.

Lovevery Subscription

Age Range: Renting baby toys to around four years

Cost: £120 per box

Pros: Beautiful, high-quality items

  • Great advice on activities and how to support your child’s learning.
  • Brilliant toys that capture their attention and specific toys for development ages
  • Great for those doing toy rotation

Cons:

  • For someone looking to swap many different toys through the months, there are better subscriptions than this one, as you are looking at a box every 2/3 months.
  • It is more costly; however, you are getting what you pay for, and it’s certainly a reasonable price for the toys you receive. Brand new toys of high quality tailored for your baby or toddler age range to help advance their learning and milestones.
  • The toys are around, bringing on and supporting developmental milestones, so it’s not about supplying a huge toy selection

Rating: 3/5 stars, quality of toys, play time given, presentation but the price point is very high for most.

The Lovevery team asked if we would want to trial an Investigator Play Kit for Eliza. This play kit is aimed at 31, 32, 33 month olds.

The toys themselves are a testament to thoughtful design. They’re not just objects; they’re tools for learning and growth, but your little one would never know as they are too busy having fun!

Every item felt like a purposeful addition to my child’s playtime repertoire, from sensory-rich fabrics to ingeniously designed puzzles. We took ours outside in the summer and had plenty of water fun and gameplay.

What truly sets Lovevery apart is their devotion to providing toys that align with a child’s developmental milestones. The play guides and activity cards accompanying each kit are perfect, easy to understand, and give you a wealth of knowledge to help you create other ideas for play. They offer invaluable suggestions on how to engage with the toys to support Eliza’s learning journey. It’s like having a personal early childhood educator in my living room, cutting through the jargon.
