Does Upgrading Your Boiler Still Make Sense in 2024?
Keeping your home warm and comfortable is essential, but boilers, the centrepiece of most UK heating systems, can be a source of confusion.
The recent announcement of a ban on gas and oil boilers in new-build homes from 2025 onwards is a sign of what’s to come in the next chapter of becoming a net-zero nation.

Is it time for a change?
What does this mean for most of us who still have boilers? The government’s push for renewable heating systems doesn’t extend to existing homes but is a step in making new properties zero-carbon ready without any work required after completion. It doesn’t mean that no more boilers will be sold or installed from next year.
However, it signifies a growing focus on energy efficiency. Upgrading to a modern A-rated boiler can significantly reduce your energy bills, which aligns with the government’s environmental goals.
Repair or replace?
The decision to repair or replace your boiler depends on several factors. While a well-maintained boiler can last for a decade or more, older models tend to be less effective. Signs of inefficiency include frequent repairs, higher energy bills, and radiators taking a long time to heat up.
Have a look at its energy rating, too. Replacing an old, less-efficient model with an ErP Rating A boiler from reliable brands such as Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, or Baxi can lower your annual costs by several hundred pounds and offset the initial investment.
What are the alternatives?
While boilers will most likely remain dominant for a good amount of years to come, renewable alternatives like heat pumps and thermal panels are gaining traction. And now being an excellent time to look at them as well. Heat pumps extract heat from the air or ground. Solar thermal panels can pre-heat your hot water. Both reduce your reliance on a boiler.
The government regularly publishes incentives for more energy-efficient homes, too, so it’s always a good idea to keep an eye out. For example, the Help to Heat energy grant aims to make eligible houses warmer and cheaper to heat.
That being said, it does make sense to upgrade your old boiler – even with the upcoming changes. Especially if you are sporting an older model which ramps up your current bills.
