Family Mediation and New Funding Available

Family Mediation and New Funding Available

It is perhaps no surprise that as separated parents you may have a different perspective on what is allowed and what isn’t. As a practicing family lawyer of nearly 20 years and practicing family mediator of over 12 years it is interesting when parents express surprise that their ex-partner does not see things their way.  Every functioning couple has disagreements and different points of view on any number of issues and therefore why would it be any different when they have separated?

Through mediation you can meet either on-line or face to face with the other parent and start to work through differences. The MOJ last week announced some funding for a limited period to assist separated parents attend mediation to help with children issues. £500 is available through Family Mediation Council registered mediators and this will funding can materially reduce the cost of engaging in the mediation process.

The process of family mediation involves you and your ex-partner attending a MIAMS appointment. This appointment is so that you meet the mediator and the mediator will discuss your situation, explain different options you have available to you and assess whether mediation is suitable and, if so, whether you are willing to engage. Providing that both parties are willing and it is assessed as a suitable process then a series of joint meetings/sessions will take place. The MOJ funding is available to subsidise the costs of the joint sessions and is strictly for family mediation involving children related issues.

The process of mediation is designed to help you to work together as parents focusing upon your common interests and focus – your children.
