The rise of the nomadic working mum

A new trend is emerging that has its foundations in the surge in flexible, remote working. It represents a shift away from the idea of ‘having it all’, towards more of a ‘have the lifestyle you want’ mantra. More and more women are realising that the push to have it all is exhausting, and that just because we could do everything plus the washing up and a late night spin class, doesn’t mean we should.

Who is the nomadic working mum?

The nomadic working mum is the woman who loves her work but also wants to live somewhere that enables her to have a slower pace of life, spend more time with her family and connect with the things that bring her joy. She appreciates that the ability for so many people to now work remotely, or on a hybrid model, means that we no longer need to be living in cities, close to offices, or even in the commuter belt.

The nomadic options

For some women, the idea of being ‘nomadic’ could simply mean feeling the freedom to relocate to an area that better fits their lifestyle goals – a more rural location perhaps, where property is cheaper and you can get better value for money. This Daily Express article reveals where you can buy a property for as little as £20,000! For others, it might mean moving house more often – pre-school age children are more flexible for this, plus there’s the option to home-school to fit the nomadic lifestyle.

For other working mums, the flexibility of flexible working could inspire a much more extreme form of nomadic working. Mum of two Rin Hamburgh for example, founder and CEO of her own copywriting agency, decided that she wanted her family to see more of the world. She took her nine year old twins out of school for a year and they are currently travelling the world in a converted camper van while she works from wherever the fancy takes them next.

How to fund your move

If you want to follow Rin’s example and are a homeowner, you’re probably better off renting your property ready for when you come back, but if you like the idea of relocating permanently then you’ll need to think about the practicalities of a house move. It is possible to keep the idea of freedom and flexibility and transfer this to the process of selling your home.

If you use Sold online estate agents for example, they’ll provide a fully managed house selling service, tailored to exactly what you need.

By selling online, you can avoid the traditional route and save yourself a lot of time and money – technology is already allowing you to work remotely and flexibly, so why not take advantage of this when you’re selling your house too?
