Why health and fitness don’t need to stop when you go on holiday

Holidays are seen as a time to get away from the daily grind and relax. Making memories with family and friends is a great way to spend your time off. However, it can be easy to let your focus slip away from your physical health.

Whilst you absolutely should relax on holiday, there are ways to incorporate health and fitness at the same time. Here are some tips to help you do just that.

Exploring active holiday options

Some holidaymakers get a bit bored soaking up the sun and laying around a pool all day. If this sounds like you, then why not look into more active holidays?

The active holiday market is huge, so take time to research different options. Yoga retreats are great for a mental health boost as well as a physical one as mindfulness will play a huge role.

For adrenaline junkies head to a location that offers plenty of extreme sports. This could be white water rafting, bungee jumping or even a skydiving centre.

Cycling holidays are perfect for getting in lots of physical activity whilst sightseeing. You can book trips that traverse the stunning Portuguese coast or meander through the Indochina region with lots of stops along the way.

Incorporating fitness into your daily routine

If a full-on activity holiday seems a bit much, try to combine both activities and relaxation. Many hotels and resorts have plenty of options for getting active while you are away. You could use the pool at quieter times to do some laps, or even use the report gym to get your weights in.

Some holidaymakers would prefer to take their activities outside and without as much pressure. You could go for romantic sunset walks with your other half or take part in sunrise yoga on the beach.

Remember to loosely plan for exercise when packing. Make sure you have clothing suitable for your preferred activity. Wearing trainers on the plane is a good way to make sure you have them without them taking up valuable suitcase space!

Healthy eating while travelling

The sheer choice of food when you are on holiday can sometimes be mindboggling. Some Brits see all-inclusive buffets as a bit of a challenge! Of course, enjoy the local cuisine whilst you are away but try to keep your health in mind at the same time.

Self-catering accommodations are perfect for keeping a small level of control over your meal choices. Plus, you will save a lot of money cooking for yourself!

If you do go out, try to make smart choices in restaurants. In warmer weather, go for lighter meals rather than heavy food as this is likely to make you feel lethargic and bloated.

Mindful relaxation and mental health

Holidays are supposed to be trips where you can recharge and relax, so remember to find the right balance.

You can support your mental health in several ways whilst you are away. Digital detoxes help reconnect you with your family and friends on a deeper level as well as the environment around you. As there are no screen distractions you will come away from your trip feeling content and rejuvenated.

Taking time for yourself whilst you are away shouldn’t be frowned on. Simple things like going for a 15-minute walk alone can help to clear your mind and melt away tension.
