Bluebells Burrow Making Childhood Last A Little Longer

Written By Abbie Coleman of MMB Magazine. A mum passionate about working mums and supporting women in business.
I first discovered the lovely Bluebells Burrow while hunting for the perfect gift for Eliza — and ended up completely falling down the rabbit hole myself! That’s when I found the magical world of Maileg and all the beautiful toys they stock. The photos and play setups are just gorgeous; they make you want to sit down and play all over again. We caught up with Bonnie to chat about life as a mum in business, her entrepreneurial journey, and what inspires her brand. I hope you love Bluebells Burrow as much as we do — it’s such a joy to support another mum doing something wonderful.

What made you decide to set up Bluebell’s burrow?

I set up Bluebell’s Burrow just over 10 years ago, while on maternity leave with my second baby. I was keen to start my own business to leave my NHS job as a Children’s Occupational Therapist and be at home more while my children were young.
After buying my daughter’s first Maileg bunny (I spent ages researching which one to get her and loved every minute of it!) I was totally hooked and already looking at which other Maileg toys I could get “her” next. So it seemed a natural decision to set up Bluebell’s and sell Maileg as my hero brand.
To be honest, I am not very good with technology, and I had to teach myself how to set up my first website and run a business along the way. But the idea of greater freedom and working from home was a big motivator for me. After about 3 years of juggling both my NHS job and the website, I was finally able to leave the NHS and just focus on Bluebell’s.
What makes Bluebell’s Burrow different?
I wanted to set up Bluebell’s Burrow as a place where you could find high-quality toys that not only promote play and imagination but also give customers a sense of a “personal touch”. I am very grateful to our lovely customers who have helped me grow and develop the business over the years. Bluebell’s Burrow was originally designed for children aged 3 – 10 years old, and girls’ toys have become more popular over the years (much to my son’s disappointment!). But this year, Bluebell has started to branch out into baby and toddler toys with the help of our new brand, Little Dutch. We also plan to bring a second brand on board later this month, which we hope will complement our other ranges.
Who are the Bluebell’s Burrows Team?
Bluebell’s is very much a family-run business, my husband helps write the weekly newsletter, responds to the occasional email and orders boxes, etc, for me. My children have always enjoyed helping decide on brands and what to buy. We even named the business after our family cat. As Bluebell’s has grown, she also out grew our home. A couple of years ago, we were very lucky to find a local warehouse where the team have been amazing in helping look after the day-to-day side of business – receiving deliveries from my brands, organising stock and boxing up all our lovely orders. Which then allows me to run, plan and develop the business.
Recently, my 11-year-old daughter has spent more time in the warehouse, seeing how things are run, and she loved going to her first trade show with me this September. She helped me hand-pick two new brands for this Christmas and enjoyed putting the orders together with me. She has told me she wants to come again next year. I think the freebies she also got might have something to do with it, too!!
And your plans for the future?
My plans for Bluebell are to continue growing and developing our baby and toddler ranges with Little Dutch and maybe a few other brands. I am also working on a brand-new, exciting project, totally separate from Bluebell, which I hope will be launched in summer 2026!
