Sheffield Hallam University is one of the largest universities in the UK, with a clear vision: to be the world’s leading applied university, achieving outstanding outcomes for our students and our city, and showing the world what a university genuinely focused on transforming lives can achieve.
We are a university physically and educationally at the heart of our city and region, attracting remarkable students from the locality, the nation and globally.
With exciting plans for the future, a new strategy, new leadership and a renewed focus upon playing a leading role locally and globally, Sheffield Hallam is looking forward to an even brighter future as the world’s leading applied for University.

Our mission to transform lives depends on Sheffield Hallam being an inclusive, diverse organisation with equality and diversity deeply embedded.
We joined the Athena SWAN charter in 2008 and were awarded a bronze institutional award in 2010, successfully renewing in 2013. Four of our academic departments currently hold Athena SWAN awards, including the Department of Biosciences, silver status.
In October 2017, we formally opened our new STEM Centre named after pioneering female engineer Hertha Ayrton. Further exciting projects are in the pipeline, developing the £14m Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre and National Centre of Excellence for Food Engineering.
The University’s Women Professors Group has a high profile at the University and initiated an internal mentoring scheme (Aspire) designed to support women academics with professorship/senior leadership aspirations, which is now in its third year. As a result, we have improved professorial gender imbalances, and we now have above sector average female representation at the professonial level.
